9. Is there a way I can speed the healing process?

The body's natural healing ability can't be hurried. However, there are several things you can do to give yourself the best chance for a speedy recovery. Your doctor will teach you proper sitting and lifting postures. Specific exercises to strengthen and retrain the muscles supporting your spine also may be recommended. While you are healing, get as much rest as your body needs, but avoid sleeping on your stomach. Eat a balanced diet. If you are overweight, this is the best time to reduce stress to your spine by taking off extra pounds. Most important of all, keep all our appointments and follow your doctor's recommendations for the best results. top

10. What ages benefit from Chiropractic care?

All ages can enjoy healthier living through chiropractic care. For seniors, improved spinal function can mean better mobility, endurance, appetite, and an improvement in many age-related ailments. Children and even infants also can benefit. Spinal trauma can occur at birth as well as later childhood activities. Most parents prefer to have their children checked regularly. When the body is changing through growth or through aging, maintaining good spinal and nervous system health is especially important. For all ages, the safe, natural chiropractic approach to health maintenance makes sense. top

11. How many acupuncture treatments are usual?

Obviously, the number of treatments vary with different conditions and individuals. Chronic problems generally require more treatment than acute ones. Some patients notice an immediate improvement after the first treatment; whereas others may not notice any effect until the seventh or eighth visit. It's been shown that a certain percentage of patients receive maximum benefit up to three months following a course of therapy. A small number of patients will experience a worsening of symptoms, as the body's energies are returning to normal. This is usual and is not cause for alarm. It is followed by improvement. Researchers internationally agree the usual number of treatments is between eight and sixteen. The usual frequency is between two and four times a week. top

Patients are urged not to enter an acupuncture program with the thought of "taking a few" to see what will happen. Even though it is possible to achieve success, a program of ten visits would have a better chance for success. Patients are encouraged to be patient with the healing process. If treatments are recommended and results occur in just five visits, the doctor may elect to discontinue treatments or continue their use to stabilize the condition. top

12. Are acupuncture results psychological?

Many critics of acupuncture have suggested the science is hypnosis or "mind over matter." This criticism is totally unfounded as acupuncture has startling effect in infants and toddlers, as well as veterinary applications. The well documented effects in surgery, as an anesthetic, further disclaims this line of reasoning. Even total skeptics report favorable response to acupuncture. However, a positive outlook is obviously beneficial in all phases of life and can speed the healing process. top
